New York City is officially entering the future. In the summer of 2020, The MTA will begin rolling out 10 newly designed subway cars. The new Kawasaki-made cars will feature large LED and digital advertising that can change color to match any color scheme. This is a far cry from the “garbage can-like cars” with gold and blue that we currently have.
“This project includes many new features to increase capacity and improve the customer experience,” said John Santamaria, a vice president and chief mechanical officer at the MTA.
The cars will also feature much wider doors and some will even have an “open gangway” design that acts as an accordion and connect multiple trains. This style car will allow passengers to walk one end of the train to the other.
Including these 10 cars arriving in July of 2020, the MTA could order up to 1,612 cars for $3.7 billion. As of now, the MTA is awaiting a $1.4 billion order for 515 closed-end cars and another 20 open-gangway cars, which will be delivered through August 2023. The first ten train cars coming next summer will be closed-ended, with the 20 open-gangway cars scheduled for May 2021 for their trial run. Before the end of 2022, the MTA board decide whether it wants to pursue fulfilling the entire remaining order with open-gangway or standard close-ended cars.
