When we think of Hollywood, the infamous sign, fame, and bright lights of California are usually what come to mind. This article is dedicated to the other city with the same name, located in South Florida, not far from artistic and sunny Miami.
Florida’s Hollywood is an emerging community with a beautiful beach front and resorts including Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort and the well-known Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood. Their downtown street art scene began in 2012 and was launched by the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency.
Thanks to the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project you can take a guided art walking tour or grab a prepared map and explore on your own! I felt like I was on a treasure hunt for art with my map in hand as I located the beautiful outdoor murals one by one, and yes, I found them all!
The works of local, national, and international artists including: Kenny Scharf, Tatiana Suarez, RONE, Ernesto Maranje, Key Detail, Yuhmi Collective and Fabio Onrack will dazzle you. Their positivity, bright colors and themes really capture the South Florida vibe. Dreamy waterscapes, pastel hues, anime features, sea & land animals, birds, portraits, and even the use of photorealism paying homage to artist greats; Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, and Jean-Michel Basquiat are found throughout the downtown area.
Street art is so relevant in urban landscapes and inspiring to observe, it showcases evolving municipalities committed to the arts and artists, urban placemaking, and supporting local businesses through positive change. What I love about Hollywood, Florida is its diversity. From art to dining, to entertainment and culture, and its beaches, there are so many options. Wherever you may travel research the surrounding areas, as you never know what you will discover. This city was a great addition to my South Florida art tour, and I look forward to returning to see the evolution of “the other Hollywood.”
