It’s summer season! The sun is brighter, the days are longer, the kids are out of school, and you’re longing for a vacation. You’ve been virtually following your friends’ around and it seems that everyone around you is off to some exotic location. To be honest, I’m guilty of the occasional travel post myself, but do you ever wonder, how can they really afford that?

Believe me when I tell you, you don’t have to be a multi-millionaire to take a bucket list trip. Simply Dream it, Plan it, Commit to it, and follow through; before you know it, you too you’ll be jet-setting!

What if I told you for $8/day you can spend a week in Bali? Or $12.50/day for a two week curated journey to South Africa. Yes, it’s possible.

Step 1: Dream it

Dream big! Take a world map and decide on where you want to go? Where have you always wanted to go? What do you enjoy on a day-to-day basis? Are you a fashionista, why not spend a long weekend in Milan? Are you a wine enthusiast, you should venture to the vineyards in South Africa? Are you an outdoor enthusiast? How about hiking the Inca Trails to Machu Picchu. In a nutshell, pick a location that is consistent with your inner core.

Step 2: Plan Ahead

Well, not really, by planning ahead, I mean let somebody do the work for you. Many travel companies offer planned trips, in some cases with flights included, where all you have to do is sign up and come along. Why not? You’re busy enough, let an expert do the planning.  Now you will have to work out your budget. This is critical. Don’t be discouraged by the cost of the trip, break it down to manageable chunks. For example, with TravelwithME, a New York based group travel company, you can sign up for a trip a year ahead, with a low deposit you can secure your spot. The remaining balance is spread out over months. For a two-week all-inclusive trip to South Africa, with tours in Johannesburg, Safaris, and Cape Town, the total cost is $4550. Gasp for air! Now let’s break it down, it’s a year away, what if you committed to saving for your dream. If you put away ~$12.50/day, 30 days a month, for a year, Tah-dah! You’re going to South Africa!

Step 3: Commit

Once you’ve made your budget, stick to it! If you get direct deposit, set up a portion to be deposited directly into your savings account. Do it every pay period, don’t delay it. Skip the double tall caramel machiatto, save the $6 for your dream vacation. Bring your lunch to work, every now and then, save the $10 (if you’re lucky in this city) from buying lunch outside. Every little baby step, is an extra dollar you can put toward your dream.

Step 4: Follow Through

As you get closer to travel day, you may start to get anxious, you may start to get nervous, thinking about the adventure you’re embarking on. It’s ok, breathe and take the leap. Step out of the comfort zone, you’ll come back with stories for days. Live your best life, commit to your dreams, you won’t regret it.

Are you convinced? It’s pretty simple, next year YOU’ll be showing off your vacation stories. Invest in yourself, take time to Travel!
