A ride-sharing service named ‘Via’ launched today in Jersey City. The service costs $2.00 per ride anywhere in downtown Chilltown and $.50 per miles outside the downtown area. Typically, you will find a spot within a couple blocks of your location. You will notice their fleet of trademark purple vans out and about.
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop calls Via a creative hybrid, a cross between a private uber ride and a public bus. “We’re doing it because we had challenges with New Jersey Transit, so we had to think about other solutions. The south side of the city and the Heights can often feel like a transportation desert.” added Mayor Fulop.
Today through March 21, the vans are only $1.00 per ride. You can dowlnoad the App or call (201) 514-6228. From now till April 1st, the first 2 rides are free using the promo code: VIAINJC
This marks New Jersey’s first on-demand city-run transit system. Via has a successful track record in over 20 countries and is headquartered in New York City.
Seems like a smart idea for residents isolated from light rails stations. What do you think? Are you cool with sharing the ride?
